This may seem like a ridiculous statement, but fat doesn’t necessarily make you fat. I’ve noticed a lot of folks lately who think avoiding foods with fat will somehow make them skinny. All the while they are piling on the calories well beyond their maintenance levels. Trust me, the fat isn’t making you fat. What’s making you fat is the additional 2k calories.
But look, here’s the deal on fats. There are some fats your body benefits from and others that you should certainly avoid. You’ve probably heard them referred to as bad and good fats. An example of good fats would be what you find in most nuts. Those would be polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Your body can actually put these to good use. The kind you want to avoid are the saturated or trans fats. You’ve probably seen these on the news in regards to fast food restaurants. They tend to load their meals with all kinds of nasty stuff.
The basic idea is this: Just because something has fats in it doesn’t mean it’s bad. Likewise, just because a food has no fat doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Just consider sugar heavy gummy bears. Sure, they’re a bit cute and who doesn’t like sweet things, but it’s candy and junk all the same. Also, guess what? They have no fat (typically). There are many other examples besides this one.
At any rate, if you want to eat healthy and lose or maintain a nice weight then just make sure you have some balance. Don’t completely abandon carbs, fat, or protein. And hey, it’s alright to put sweet things in your mouth too. In fact, some of the most delicious things you’ll ever eat are naturally sweet anyways. That reminds me, it’s almost watermelon season. Oh, by the way, don’t eat greasy fast food that’s pumped full of nasty bad fats.
